Joan Honour Smith, the photo retouching artist who composited Jack Nicholson into the vintage photo at the end of the film, recalled that Kubrick was particularly incensed by this clumsy attempt at censorship.

“I finished Blade Runner, and it was a disaster. And my investors, who were giving me a really hard time, said, “We have to test this with an uplifting ending.” Why do we always want uplifting endings? “All right. I’ll do it.” By then, I had talked to Stanley Kubrick a few times. I called him up. I said: “Listen. I know you shot the hell out of The Shining. I know you’ve got [hours] of helicopter stuff. Can I have some of the stuff? The next day I had 17 hours of helicopter footage. So the end of Blade Runner is Stanley Kubrick’s footage.”

- Director Ridley Scott, in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter

Handwritten notes by Stanley Kubrick from his early development of the screenplay for The Shining. His notes describe an encounter between Jack and Wendy, where Wendy injures Jack in an attempt to defend herself. In his distinctive scrawl, Kubrick toys with different ways in which Wendy might injure Jack. These musings ultimately led to the scene in the finished film where Wendy strikes Jack with a baseball bat on the stairs of the Colorado Lounge.

Kubrick also considers that Wendy may need to be a physical match for Jack, speculating that actors Lee Remick or Jane Fonda might be possibilities for the role.

Test prints for the iconic final image of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining. Jack Nicholson’s face was superimposed on an original photo from the 1920′s. Kubrick assistant Emilio D’Alessandro remembers: “These are two of the numerous print samples that Stanley requested to evaluate the result. A slightly darker halation around Jack’s head gives the trick away. Better do it again, right, Stanley?”

Photo taken from Stanley Kubrick and me, the compelling memoir of Emilio D'Alessandro, personal assistant to Stanley Kubrick for thirty years. A collection of heartfelt private memories spanning from A Clockwork Orange to Eyes Wide Shut, Stanley Kubrick and me is a unique biography offering a completely different perspective on an extraordinary modern artist. Featuring more than 50 never-before-seen photographs.

Stanley Kubrick and me, by Emilio D’Alessandro and Filippo Ulivieri, Arcade Publishing, May 2016.
